Malay Mail: What now for legal reform?

At lunch with some lawyers and chambering students yesterday, I re-lived the horror of legal practice I experienced almost a decade ago.

Long-winded jargon, excessive red tape, clumsy processes and long waits for extraction of legal documents, lost files, cases not listed, and “missing” or moody court personnel: just the usual day-in-the-life of anyone using the Malaysian courts.

Do the treacherous slopes of the court process mean that Malaysians do not have access to justice, unless represented by a lawyer? How many of us can afford a lawyer? If the average Joe had a grouse, would he be able to deal with it confidently in our court of law?
