A journey of healing and self-discovery.

It was such an honour to be included in Free Malaysia Today (FMT) for their World Yoga Day feature. I am so excited to share with you how the practice of yoga helped me, and can help you navigate the challenging journey of grief.

Having experienced deep personal loss myself, I found solace and healing through yoga. This blog post is a TLDR version, but seriously, check out the post here.

The focus on Yoga For Grief classes.

The online news and magazine portal was very keen to learn more about my Yoga For Grief classes (have you signed up for the FREE Chakra Immersion here?).

We talked a little about how we get disconnected from our breath and body during grief. Yoga offers a path to reconnect with them. By focusing on our breath and body, we restore balance and calm. Yoga enables us to tune in, be present, and find a sense of grounding in our grief.

Chair Yoga in my virtual classes.

During my virtual yoga classes – which are mainly Yoga For Grief classes – I prefer to use the chair and other props. This is to ensure accessibility and safety for all practitioners.

During the class, as participants move through yoga poses, emotions to surface and are allowed to be expressed. I sometimes guide participants to work with their bodies’ seven main energy centres – or chakras – which correspond to different aspects of the physical and emotional wellbeing.

Meditation in grief.

I also discussed with FMT that meditation is a powerful tool for navigating grief. In the sessions I conduct, the class concludes with a guided meditation to promote inner peace and self-reflection.

Meditation allows us to observe our thoughts and emotions without judgment, creating space for healing and acceptance. Through regular practice, we cultivate mindfulness and develop resilience, enabling us to move forward with clarity and lightness.

The positive feedback from participants speaks volumes about the effectiveness of yoga in helping them through difficult times.

Meditation for grief

through the chakras

In grief, we feel so much emotions and experience all kinds of stress, or even trauma, that there isn’t much clarity. Use this guided meditation through the chakras to gain some insight on where you hold your grief and, with repeated practice, you will gain clarity and peace in your journey in grief.

Yoga is a personal journey – much like grief.

Yoga is a personal journey. It’s not about comparing ourselves to others or achieving Instagram-worthy poses. It is a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and self-care.

As a beginner, it is better to approach yoga with an open mind and trust your teacher’s guidance.

Yoga is a philosophy that encompasses values of truth, compassion, and equanimity, and is not religious in nature. By embracing yoga as a way of life, we enhance mindfulness, improve physical wellbeing, and protect ourselves from injury.

Yoga at every age.

The piece also featured my client, Sinnathamby Appoo, who started practicing yoga in his early 70s (he is now in his early 80s). He says, “I look forward to the classes every week. They’re very helpful; because of them, I have no new health complications, and can go about my life normally.”

Aw… thanks, uncle! πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’Ÿ

The impact yoga can have.

Again, I am really chuffed with the piece, and I think FMT, the editor and writer (and awesome photographer) to feature me for its World Yoga Day piece.

I am so happy that yoga was highlighted, especially its healing impact on the human experience of grief. Through breath-work, movement, meditation, and self-reflection, yoga provides a pathway to healing, self-compassion, and inner peace.

I invite you to explore the transformative qualities of yoga for grief, whether through online sessions or in-person classes (or in the free immersion below!).
